39 Nobel laureates are calling for an end to the Putin regime – 2024-03-30 04:24:04

Thirty-nine Nobel laureates in a letter call on the international community to strengthen its support for Ukraine in repelling the Russian invasion, to support the democratic opposition in Russia and not to recognize Vladimir Putin as the country’s president. Their appeal was published on the “T-invariant” website.

“The war in Ukraine and the assassination of Alexei Navalny are not only about Russia and Ukraine. The Putin regime has shown that it represents a direct and clear threat to all of humanity,” the text reads.

“The tragedies of 20th century totalitarianism force a commitment to the freedoms and dignity of the individual. Putin is flagrantly violating them. It has turned Russia into a heavily militarized police state, armed with the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, which poses an existential threat to the world.”

“Humanity can avoid self-destruction only if it adheres to the principles of democracy and international law in the field of human rights. The Putin regime cynically trampled on them.. We call on world leaders and all people of good will not to entertain any illusions about Mr. Putin and his criminal regime.”

The text emphasizes that for the Putin’s threat Navalny and other Russian opposition leaders had warned “following their great predecessor”, 1975 Nobel Peace Prize laureate academic Andrei Zakharov. The 39 academics also say that in order to boost “Russians’ hopes for a democratic future,” Ukraine’s victory in the war with Russia must be ensured.

The text is signed by 16 Nobel laureates in the fields of physiology and medicine, 9 laureates in the field of physics, 6 in the field of chemistry, four laureates of the Nobel Prize in Literature and three laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize. Among them are the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich (Nobel Prize for Literature 2015) and the Ukrainian Alexandra Matviychuk (head of the Center for Civil Liberties, Nobel Peace Prize 2022).
