The United States will fine the Russian Federation for attempting to take Americans hostage.
The United States of America will impose fines on Russia for trying to use Americans as bargaining chips.
US President Joe Biden stated this, reports Reuters.
The US President made this statement on the anniversary of the arrest of The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, whom the Russian FSB allegedly accused of espionage.
“Like I told Evan’s parents, I will never give up hope either. We will continue to work every day to get him fired,” Biden said.
The White House called the detention of the journalist completely unfair and illegal.
“We will continue to condemn and impose fines for Russia’s horrific efforts to use Americans as bargaining chips,” Biden added.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson also issued a joint statement calling the journalist’s arrest unjustified and unjust.
Who else did Biden remember?
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Gershkovich’s arrest had made the Russian media environment more repressive.
In their statements Friday, Biden and Blinken also condemned the detention of former Marine Paul Whelan, who was arrested in Moscow in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years in prison on espionage charges in 2020.
“To Evan, Paul Whelan and all Americans held hostage or unlawfully detained abroad: we are with you. And we will never stop working to bring you home,” Biden said.
Let us remind you, a year ago in Yekaterinburg, employees of the Russian Federal Security Service detained The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich. The media representative is accused of “espionage.”
