KPK Scandal: Alleged Extortion Complaints Against Prosecutor TI

Jakarta

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Council said there were complaints of alleged extortion by the prosecutor KPK with the initials TI at the end of 2023. Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) Boyamin Saiman said that the Corruption Eradication Commission was slow in dealing with the case.

“We are responding to the attitude of the KPK Supervisory Board which neglected this case, it should have been handled but it was not handled. Instead, it was thrown at the KPK leadership. Then the KPK leadership has not done anything, it is suspected that the person has returned to their original agency,” said Boyamin, Friday (29/ 3/2024).

According to Boyamin, if the prosecutor with the problem has returned to the original agency, for example the Attorney General’s Office, the Corruption Eradication Commission will have difficulty examining this individual.

“If you have returned to your original agency, if it is true that the prosecutor is an individual, based on the Prosecutor’s Law, for a prosecutor’s examination, you must have written permission from the Attorney General. If you are still at the Corruption Eradication Committee, you can handle it right away,” he said.

Boyamin assessed that the initial mistake lay with the KPK Council who did not hold an ethics trial against this individual. He said that the KPK Council had abandoned the case.

“We regret the attitude of the KPK Supervisory Board in ignoring this case. It should have been handled but it wasn’t handled, instead it was thrown at the KPK leadership. Then the KPK leadership also hasn’t done anything,” he said.

Boyamin also brought up the confession of the perpetrator of the case broker at the Supreme Court (MA) Dadan Tri Yudianto. Dadan once said he was asked for six million United States (US) dollars.

“The Supervisory Board and KPK leadership were equally careless, not acting quickly in other cases. Dadan Tri Yudianto, in his plea, said that he had been asked for six million dollars, because he didn’t want to end up being a suspect. Who (who asked for the money) should have been investigated?” he said.

Looking at these two cases, Boyamin said that the Corruption Eradication Committee did not move quickly to address the alleged corruption. The case should have been tried immediately.

“Neither the Supervisory Board nor the Corruption Eradication Committee moved quickly, Gercep, on the issue of alleged demands for money from witnesses or potential suspects,” he said.

“The Corruption Eradication Commission must move quickly to resolve and bring to justice the alleged criminal act of corruption,” he said.

Dewas Accepts Complaints

The KPK Council previously received a complaint regarding a KPK prosecutor with the initials TI who was suspected of committing extortion. The IT prosecutor is suspected of extorting Rp. 3 billion from the witness.

“It’s true, the complaint came from Dewas,” said one source detikcomWednesday (27/3).

After that, Dewas is said to have forwarded the complaint to the Corruption Eradication Commission. The information obtained stated that the prosecutor was blackmailing a witness regarding one of the cases being investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission. The prosecutor allegedly used the money for personal needs.

“It has been handed over to the investigation to be followed up,” said the source.

The KPK Council has also confirmed the existence of complaints of alleged extortion. It is suspected that the extortion was carried out by the KPK prosecutor who extorted Rp. 3 billion from the witness.

The KPK Council said the complaint had been forwarded to the Deputy for Enforcement and Deputy for Prevention at the KPK.

“It is true that Dewas received the complaint in question and after processing it according to the POB at Dewas, it has been forwarded with an official note dated December 6 2023, to the Deputy for Enforcement and the Deputy for Prevention to be followed up according to the authority and applicable regulations, with a copy to the KPK leadership,” said KPK Dewas member Albertina Ho told reporters, Friday (29/3).
