Mexico City, Mexico / world today news/ During excavations, scientists discovered two caches in the foundations of the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, media reports.
In recent months, a research group led by Alejandro Sarabey of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History has been engaged in expanding a passage that was discovered as early as the 1930s.
In the process of work, they came across several unknown tunnels. In one of them they found a secret that led to the center of the pyramid. Archaeologists also came across another tunnel that led them to a burial chamber. In it they found traces of four ritual burials, three of which were of children.
In the room at the center of the Pyramid, scientists came across the remains of a pyrite disk, on top of which was placed a human figure made of obsidian. Near it they found various objects, including seashells and several stone knives.
In another room, 11 clay vessels dedicated to the god of rain, several obsidian and stone knives, as well as eagle bones and remains of dog skeletons were found.
Among the artefacts discovered, three figurines made of green stone and depicting human beings, as well as a mask, also made of green stone, aroused the greatest interest. They were all found in a tomb that, according to initial reports, belonged to a particularly wealthy Mayan priest.
The researchers emphasize that a similar mask has been found before, but in burial mounds, not in pyramid caches.
Excavations carried out by the team of Alejandro Sarabey show that other buildings were previously erected on the site of the Pyramid of the Sun. In their fieldwork in the area, the scientists discovered the foundations of walls from three residential buildings, as well as traces of another wall, which is suspected to have surrounded a plaza or some other cultic space.
