From very early on, people who have offered penance to God for some favor received, began their journey from the ruins of the San Esteban chaplaincy, along Calle de La Amargura to the El Calvario parish.
With bare feet and blindfolded, Corina Ortiz, fulfilled the penance offered to God on this Holy Thursday, with this physical sacrifice she expresses her gratitude to the almighty for having granted her work and health.
“I asked him for many things and he fulfilled them. When I went to the Stations of the Cross I promised him on Holy Thursday to do penance and now I am fulfilling it for favors that he has given me. I am asking him for another favor and I am sure that he will do it for me.” to grant,” he said.
Along this long route of a thousand linear meters, the penitents offer the sacrifice and raise prayers to the creator under the sweltering sun of the time. Some are helped by family and friends who give them words of encouragement and place cardboard or towels along the way to make less painful the heat of the street.
The penitents on Good Thursday and Good Friday have been a tradition for more than 300 years. Some decide to walk barefoot for long distances, be blindfolded, on their knees or carry an image; This is part of religious traditions, although the church does not consider it necessary to make these types of sacrifices to obtain God’s forgiveness.
