ZAPOPAN, Jal. ,sucedióenoaxaca.com/vía UAG).- Donating blood is a fundamental solidarity gesture, which is why it is crucial to raise people’s awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation. Transfusions are essential to save lives in cases of accidents, burns, chemotherapy or organ transplants.
The majority of blood donations in Mexico are made by patients’ relatives, only 8.5% of the total are voluntary and altruistic. As a result, Mexico is located in the last places in this type of donation in all of Latin America.
For this reason, on March 20 and 21, an altruistic blood donation campaign will be held at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG), an activity coordinated by Dr. Karina Orozco, Director of the Academic Department of Internal Medicine II of the UAG, and Ms. Sahara Ornelas, Social Worker at the State Blood Transfusion Center (CETS).
On March 20, the mobile modules will be in Ciudad Universitaria, while on the 21st they will be at the Institute of Biological Sciences, both from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The blood collected during the campaign at the UAG will be destined mainly to Hospitals of the Jalisco Ministry of Health, such as the Western General Hospital (Zoquipan), Women’s Hospitals, Jalisciense Institute of Cancerology, Municipal Medical Services of Guadalajara and Zapopan (Cruz green) and Regional Hospitals of Jalisco that do not have a Blood Bank.
3 reasons to donate blood
The purpose of this type of campaign is to make people aware of the importance of helping those who need blood transfusions.
Among the reasons to be a voluntary donor, Sahara Ornelas highlighted, are: saving lives, because donating blood can save up to 3 lives and is essential to maintain a constant and renewed supply; because it can happen to you, since no one is exempt from needing blood in the event of an accident or illness, including friends and family, and because donating blood voluntarily and regularly can become a family tradition, which contributes positively to society.
How much blood is extracted in a donation?
About 450 milliliters of blood are removed, which is less than 10 percent of the total blood volume in the body (an average adult has between 4.5 and 5 liters of blood). The body will replace the lost fluid in about 36 hours.
What are the requirements to be a blood donor?
Be over 18 and under 65 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos, fast for a minimum of 4 hours and a maximum of 12 hours: drink plenty of fluids, not be sick and not be undergoing medical treatment. People with tattoos can donate 4 months after having it done.
