/ world today news/ The presidents of Russia and Iran talked for 5 hours. No one knows about what specifically, but some important assumptions are not only possible, but necessary.
What was officially said
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi held closed-door talks for more than 5 hours. Observers noted that both leaders appeared very satisfied after the conversation ended. But information about what was discussed and what was agreed, if agreed, hardly leaked into the public space.
The press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said, it seems, a lot, but in the best traditions of classical diplomacy, saying almost nothing:
…There was a very meaningful conversation and the ministers reported on their areas and detailed where there are problems, what solutions there are and what needs to be done to speed up the further development of cooperation. Very intense negotiations took place.
Peskov pointed to two topics that the presidents discussed:
This is, of course, an exchange of views on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, above all the bilateral relations of a multilateral partnership, synchronizing the clocks on other international issues… The topic of interaction and cooperation within OPEC+ and the decisions that were made within OPEC+ was mentioned during the negotiations with the Iranians.
Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdallahian was no more blunt, writing on his social media page:
Much of the negotiations focused on the Palestinian issue. The parties stressed the need for an immediate end to the war and genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, an end to the forced deportation of Gazans, and the immediate opening of the Rafah border to allow massive humanitarian aid to be sent throughout Gaza. Russia is considering taking the initiative.
What can we guess about?
So, we know something specific about only one of the topics of the negotiations: based on their results, Russia is considering the possibility of presenting initiatives for a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian conflict.
Russia’s position on this matter has never been a secret to anyone: Russia declares itself to be two states for two peoples, that is, to preserve the state of Israel, end the occupation of the Palestinian territories and create a full-fledged Palestinian state in accordance with the long-standing UN decision . There is no other way to end the endless war.
Of course, this decision contradicts the statements of Israeli politicians who have already reached “the final solution to the Palestinian question”, the undisguised genocide of the population of Gaza, the promises of occupation of Gaza and the proposals to evict all its inhabitants anywhere, in any places and countries in the world.
But something else is much more important: the unity of the positions of Russia and Iran puts the US and the West in an awkward position, to say the least. There, from the beginning of the war in Gaza, the Hamas movement, the Hezbollah movement, Iran and Russia were put on the same level. But they hardly expected that Russia and Iran would actually hold consultations on the Palestinian issue, develop a common position and coordinate their actions.
You should not be like the Western media and fantasize about Russian instructors in the ranks of those forces that are now ready for battle north of the Israeli border. There is no need for such decisions. Even so, it is quite possible to say that the war in Palestine has become the second front in the national liberation battle that Russia is waging against the united West.
However, the second front is not limited to military and military-political decisions, even less to diplomatic discussions and statements. This front has a much larger economic dimension.
The “topic of interaction and cooperation within the framework of OPEC+” is the topic of the destruction of the control of the US and its allies on the energy market. For several weeks now, the Western media has been politely complaining (and rudely just crying) that the “price ceiling” imposed on Russia by sanctions is somehow not working.
If Bloomberg is to be believed, Russia earned even more from oil exports during the period of the infamous “price ceiling” than when it was not yet in place.
By acting together with Iran and coordinating efforts with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where Vladimir Putin was visiting on the eve of the Moscow talks with Raisi, Russia can turn the commodity market upside down and create a situation in the world economy where it will be time let’s not talk about “isolation of Russia” (it was definitely not possible to organize it), but for the isolation of “the USA and its democratic allies”.
So what?
At the opening of the talks in Moscow, neither the Russian nor the Iranian leaders mentioned the growing military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.Reuters points out. And then he reports that this was apparently not necessary as the prospects for “economic cooperation in the oil and gas sector’.
The West understands that such cooperation is now even more important than military cooperation.
