Karlsson’s Pole Incident Leads to Dramatic Finish: Ends Season in 15th Place and Third in Overall World Cup Rankings

Karlsson was determined to end the season well and had a good feeling for a long time. Then came the fall – at her second staff violation.

– First I broke a pole, a girl stepped off it and I clearly waved to get in touch with a leader and then I broke the other. It was just as good to take everything at once, says Karlsson, who felt energetic in his body to SVT Sport.

It was a mess before Karlsson got two new poles after the fall at about 13 km. She then did another pole shift inside the stadium and didn’t even put the straps on properly.

– I had far too long poles and there was no point in even putting them on. It was way too far up, Karlsson explains the confusion.

Slind: “Ruined my day”

Astrid Öyre Slind, who Karlsson tangled with at the second pole violation, chose to blame Karlsson for the incident.

– It was very unnecessary. You have to be more attentive in such a large field and she knows that. She drove right over me and then I have no chance and end up last. It ruined my day, says Slind to SVT Sport.

Down to 26th place

Karlsson rode several kilometers without getting the poles in order and lost more and more. She was down to 26th but finished well and sprinted to the finish in 15th.

She passed Ebba Andersson, Moa Ilar and Linn Svahn and became the second best Swede after Jonna Sundling who finished fourth.

Karlsson finished third in the overall World Cup.

– I had a good body to work with, but then a lot of other things go wrong, says Karlsson.
