The restaurant opened in South Rome, in the district of Spinaceto is the 700th number that McDonald’s has opened on Italian territory. The “7 Times 100” event, held in Rome on March 15th in the presence of Giorgia FavaroCEO of the company, and, among others, the MASAF minister Francesco Lollobrigidais an opportunity to take stock of the situation on what the company has created in terms of value for our country and how much more it can do.
To understand how much McDonald’s Italia has decided to invest and grow together with the Italian territory, just look at the numbers: 700 restaurants frequented by 1.2 million customers a day, 155 licensees, 35 thousand employees (most of whom are women) and 85% of Italian suppliers. “I’m loving it/Italy” is the slogan that summarizes all this, and which finds concrete expression in four pillars: quality and origin of the products, sustainability, closeness to local communities, work as an opportunity for inclusion and development.
As regards the ingredients used, as mentioned, 85% of them come from local companies. In detail: 100% beef supplied by 15 thousand Italian farmers, 100% Italian milk, as well as bacon and chicken, raised on the ground without GMOs.
Sustainability objectives
On the sustainability side, the objective is to intervene on the entire supply chain. In this regard it should be noted that since 2019, a path to eliminate single-use plastic has been started, with a saving of one thousand tons of plastic per year. Furthermore, the current packaging, made of 90% paper, is recyclable, certified and recycled. McDonald’s commitment to the environment and the circular economy begins right in the restaurants, and then continues outside, involving the entire community. In fact, with FISE Assoambiente and Utilitalia it was possible to create “Days with you for the environment”, an initiative that calls together McDonald’s employees and all citizens to combat the uncontrolled dispersion of waste in the environment. The project, born in 2021, aims to clean up parks, streets, beaches and squares in hundreds of Italian municipalities. The first three editions involved 15 thousand people, 350 stages and over 11 thousand bags collected.
Furthermore, since 2018, the agreement signed with Coldiretti, the Italian Breeders Association and Inalca supports a sustainable Italian beef supply chain, certifying farms in terms of animal, environmental and economic-social well-being. And since 2014, McDonald’s has also collaborated with the CasaClima agency to create restaurants with low environmental impact in terms of materials and use of resources and energy sources. In this regard, the installation of 400 charging points for electric cars in 200 restaurants is planned by 2025.
Proximity to local communities instead means guaranteeing that citizens present in the area are listened to, providing them with support and help. Which translates to Ronald McDonald Italia ETS Children’s Foundation, present with five Ronald Houses located between Rome, Brescia and Florence and four Family Rooms in hospital facilities (more than 54 thousand children and families hosted and approximately 290 thousand overnight stays offered). Still on the solidarity front, starting from the first lockdown, McDonald’s has donated thousands of hot meals to people in difficulty through collaboration with Banco Alimentare and Comunità Sant’Egidio (this year the goal is to reach 200 thousand hot meals).
“You are not alone, let us help you” instead, it is the initiative that sees the posting of stickers showing the anti-violence and stalking number 1522 in restaurant bathrooms.
Finally, work as an opportunity for development and inclusion means equal opportunities and the possibility of professional growth for its employees. In fact, McDonald’s offers 1 million hours of training per year to all its employees (of which 62% are women), at all levels. Particular attention is then given to the hiring of foreign employees (15% of the total) and to young people under 29 years of age (55% of the total), in addition to the offer of scholarships to those who are undertaking university studies .
