Around 8:30 p.m. the fire brigade arrived at the warehouse on the Colijnsplaatse Groeneweg, a side street of the Oost-Zeedijk near Kats. It is still unclear what exactly was in the warehouse. After two hours of extinguishing the fire, it became clear that the building could no longer be saved. From that moment on, the fire brigade focused on causing the building to burn out in a controlled manner. The fire was under control around 11 p.m.
The fire released a lot of smoke, the safety region warned. The clouds of smoke could be seen in the distance. For safety reasons, part of the N256 between Goes and Zierikzee was temporarily closed, including the Zeeland Bridge. Traffic was diverted at the scene.
A special team was called in to measure whether the smoke had any effect on the environment. The measured values were below the risk level, according to the safety region. Local residents were advised to keep windows closed and not stand in the smoke.
