After two years, the time has finally come again for Daniël Lohues fans: a new record. Yesterday the Erican released his album We out. An album with 13 songs in Drenthe and one in Dutch.
While Lohues often used a backing band on his previous albums, it seems We according to RTV Drenthe presenter René Steenbergen, more soloistic. “I don’t know, I just made it. I thought, ‘I’m just making what I’m making.’ I wrote it in October and I recorded it the first two weeks of November,” says Lohues.
Lohues had initially written thirty songs that could be included on the album. “I made it as an LP, that’s why there are only 14 on it. I had about thirty. Less can fit on an LP than on a CD. You get attached to it, you know every detail and you have to do that. I didn’t listen again for a while. Now he left the house early, I put my stuff in. It remains a nice process,” the Erican explains.
Lohues keeps the songs that didn’t make the album in a special place. “It’s somewhere, especially in my head. Maybe there will be a reason to release it again. It’s there, but I’m already working on new songs. In practice, it never actually happens that I’m a parent song on a new record.”
With a new album comes a new tour. Lohues now visits numerous theaters throughout the country, where he also plays the new songs from We. Lohues: “I have already had a lot of nice reactions. During my theater show I perform more new songs than I normally do. I had far too many songs, so I had to choose. It is nice to play new things. I think theater is very beautiful work. Doing songs and the stories around them. The silence in the theater is very beautiful and that you can do it very softly, acoustically, I think it is very beautiful.”
Almost all of Lohues’ theater shows are now sold out. There are still a number of tickets available for some. “That’s incredible, I can’t complain,” he says, as the doorbell rings in the background. A postal worker brings him a round package. The tour lasts until June 16. It will then conclude in the Atlas Theater in Emmen. “Today I have to go to Ulft, which is very nice there, that’s where I recorded the first two albums. It’s nice that people are coming back and that a new audience is joining us, including young people.”
After the tour, Lohues will travel. America and France, among others, are on the agenda. In addition, in December, during the Advent season, he will perform arrangements of his own songs in the theaters together with a baroque orchestra.
On April 27, Lohues, together with Bouke and Jannes, will be one of the main artists along the route that the royal family takes through the center of Emmen on King’s Day. The Erican ends the day on the mainstage on the Raadhuisplein.
“But I’m not going to say anything about that,” he says firmly. “I have agreed with the mayor and the king that nothing will be said about this. The king himself has agreed with me,” he says dogmatically.
