The infected rams were not fertile for six to seven weeks after infection, while that was precisely the time to let the ram walk with the ewes, to let nature do its work. In addition, the infected ewes would have a greater chance of miscarriage and there was fear of lambs with birth defects.
Miraculously
“All very healthy lambs, we never expected that,” says farmer Hermien happily, looking at her animals. “We were afraid that we would get deformed lambs, like with the previous bluetongue outbreak, but these are all very beautiful, strong lambs. Miraculously.”
So fortunate for Wilko and Hermien: they can enjoy frolicking lambs in the meadow again this spring. “Last week they were all walking outside. It’s a beautiful sight, all those people stopping and taking pictures. That gives spring.”
