On Tuesday, the news came that UFC legend Mark Coleman ended up in hospital in connection with a house fire. Coleman’s parents didn’t come out so he ran in and managed to get them both to safety. He went back inside to save the family dog but was then seriously injured as a result of smoke inhalation.
He was taken to hospital via helicopter and was in critical condition until today. Former colleague and long-time friend Wes Sims has provided ongoing updates on Coleman on social media. A video clip was uploaded today where the veteran can be seen talking and hugging his daughters.

He told about what went through his mind during the fire.
Sweet God, I’m so lucky. I can’t believe my parents are alive. … I had to make a decision, Wes. Because I got out of my room and went to the door and it was already horrible. I couldn’t breathe. I almost had to go outside and I went back in and got them. I can’t believe I got them but I couldn’t find (our dog) Hammer.
First heavyweight champion in the UFC
Coleman may not be as well known among newer fans as Chuck Lidell, Randy Couture and other pioneers. But the fact is that he became the UFC’s first heavyweight champion. As an inductee into two parts of the organization’s hall of fame, he is one of those who helped the sport grow into what it is today.
During his career he also managed to win a Pride Grand Prix tournament. In one and the same evening, he played three games, all of which ended with a win.
