Over the last twenty years, stylists have competed in dressing Sharon Stone. Valentino, Schiaparelli, Dolce and Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Versace, just to name a few, had the honor of accompanying her with their creations on the international red carpets. But there was a moment when no brand wanted to give her or lend her a dressnot even for an important occasion like the Oscar ceremony: she told it herself in a podcast (Table for Two), in which he explains with amusement the small “stylistic tragedy” that occurred in 1992.
It was the year of Basic Instict, and the actress had been invited to the Academy Awards even though the film was not in competition (it will be the following year). The film, which would soon become a box office hit, had just been released, and Sharon Stone was not yet enjoying the fame that would hit her in the following months. The problem is that at the time she still couldn’t afford one of those fantastic evening dresses that the guests show off during the Hollywood ceremony, and “Nobody wanted to lend me a suit. I couldn’t believe it, and I had no money to buy it”.
After asking several brands and getting only negative answers, he realized he had to make do: “I bought a polyester garment by Betsey Johnson, it was the most I could afford,” he says. Obviously Sharon Stone also had to take care of the beauty part alone: “I did my hair and make-up, and I thought I was horrible”, recalls the actress.
Fortunately, despite feeling embarrassed among all those people in their “40,50000 dollar suits”, once inside the theater things went well. “They gave me a seat in the fourth row, which wasn’t bad. And above all, when Anthony Hopkins he saw me and made a gesture, and I understood that he had seen my film”. At that point he could breathe a sigh of relief: his stellar career had officially begun.
