Nissan and Honda Announce Partnership to Compete with Chinese Automakers in Electric Car Development

The Japanese automobile companies “Nissan” and “Honda” announced on Friday an agreement to evaluate the possibilities of a strategic partnership in the development of electric cars and other areas.

Analysts say that such a decision was made in connection with the desire to engage in a competitive battle with Chinese automakers, which have developed rapidly in the field of electric cars, while Japanese companies have lagged behind, given their focus on hybrid cars.

“Nissan” and “Honda” explain that the companies will evaluate opportunities for cooperation in the areas of development of car software, electric car-related components and complementary products.

Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe emphasizes that the car manufacturing industry is experiencing changes that can be observed only once a quarter.

Meanwhile, Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida points out that “we cannot win the competitive battle if we stick to conventional knowledge and traditional approaches.”
