Doctors from UMBAL Burgas and police officers are donating blood today for strangers in need. About 30 free blood donors took part in the action organized by the Burgas hospital only until noon.
The first to set an example were senior commissioner Emil Pavlov – director of the regional directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Dr. Svetoslav Todorov, deputy director of UMBAL Burgas.
They were joined by young doctors from the hospital and officers from various units of the law enforcement agencies.
The action is organized by the doctors of UMBAL Burgas, who donate blood for their patients. Outside of emergencies, for which relatives and friends are usually mobilized, there are always people in need of regular blood transfusions at the hospital.
These are patients with blood diseases – e.g. thalassemia, elderly people with anemia.
There are over 30 thalassemics in the region alone and their lives depend on monthly blood transfusions. At the moment, UMBAL Burgas is treating elderly and single people with low hemoglobin who have no relatives and no one to donate blood for them.
“We joined the action because blood saves life. We should not wait for an accident or a health problem with a loved one to become a donor. If every healthy person donates blood at least twice a year, calls for donors from desperate relatives will be a thing of the past and there will be enough blood,” was the most common motive shared by donors today.
Everyone shared that this is not the first time they donate, they do it regularly and not only during promotions.
At the end of the month, this year’s graduates from Burgas will also become blood donors. Schools have already applied for inclusion in the initiative of the Burgas hospital “You didn’t do this”, designed specifically for adults.
