Maria Jose Mora to Lead Performing Arts at Institut Valencià de Cultura: Plans for a New Cycle of Cultural Exploration and Innovation

VALENCIA. Will be Maria Jose Mora who, from now on, will lead the deputy directorate of Performing Arts at the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC). The choreographer, dancer and cultural manager is not a new face for the institution and she knows its structure well, since in recent years she has served as artistic director of the Dansa València festival, which is part of the IVC itself. It just so happened a few days ago that the presentation of the new edition coincided with the day on which the full Council approved her appointment as deputy director. But what will be its main lines of action?

Culture has published the projects with which the candidates for the three attached directorates (Performing Arts, Audiovisual and Cinematography and Music and Popular Culture) won in the selection process, lines of action that, in the case of Mora, point to a “new cycle” with a scenic project based on the exploration of Valencian, Spanish and universal cultural heritage; in the promotion of contemporary Valencian creation; or support for research.

In this sense, with regard to the artistic line, Mora points out the importance of commitment to contemporary creation, understanding “innovation and taking risks” as part of the function of public theater. “We should not occupy the commercial theater space, the domain of private companies, but we will always keep the public in mind as a fundamental part of the ecosystem,” she says. Furthermore, although he emphasizes that the programming will follow up on Valencian creators, he also points out as a “fundamental” element that “in this new stage we are committed to presenting shows from different origins, that we abandon self-consumption, that we open ourselves to the world and that we become contaminated by other visions.”

From classical theater to experimentation

As regards the Main Theatre, Text theater will have greater relevance and, in general, the programming will be based on the recovery and revision of classic texts, both Valencian and national, with special attention to the Golden Age, as well as the production and exhibition of timeless universal theater. In fact, the project itself already makes a programming proposal for the current semester, with titles such as The discreet loverby Lope de Vega and directed by Lluís Homar, or Alfredo Sanzol’s adaptation of Bernarda Alba’s house of Lorca, among others.

It will be reserved, therefore, the Teatre Rialto for a more contemporary project, with a ‘menu’ that will accommodate contemporary text, movement arts or circus and special attention to proposals that are aimed at new generations. For its part, the Sala 7located in the same building, is proposed as a versatile space to promote research and experimentation by emerging artists, hosting small-format hybrid projects or residencies.

But it is not just about existing spaces, Mora’s project also proposes the creation of an “ephemeral” space in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Plaza del Patriarca or the Plaza de la Reina in which “once a month passersby “enjoy the performing arts in a close way.” As for the festivals, as it could not be otherwise, the framework of Dansa València is maintained, which in these years has wanted to enhance its profile as a professional fair, beyond the exhibition, and in Sagunt a Escena y Fresca , as well as in the La Granja center, points out the need to study expanding its financing.

Less own production and more support

Regarding in-house productions, “in a conscious manner”, the number of annual self-produced shows will be reduced considering, says Mora’s project, that “excellence and care must prevail and try not to suffocate the technical teams.” and management.” Mora does advance that, in the production section, the annual creation of its own dance and circus shows is ensured. The project pays special attention to accompaniment, something that translates into different measures, such as the promotion of a “renewed” dramaturgy laboratory Insula dramataria Josep Lluís Sirera, a stage research laboratory, a training program as well as an accompaniment program to young artists.

Another of MªJosé Mora’s proposals is the creation of a new space for marketing and exchange with different agents in the sector, a biannual meeting of a small format and short duration with the aim of achieving the “maximum dissemination of our creation.” Regarding the budget, the new deputy director points out the need to “equate our resources to other production centers in the country”, for which she considers an increase in allocations “essential” in addition to exploring other possibilities to diversify income. .
