Adrien M & Claire B: Pioneers of Poetic and Symbolic Experiences with Craftsmanship and Digital Devices

Authors of poetic and symbolic experiences that combine craftsmanship and digital devices, Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne have continued to make technology a caress since their paths crossed in 2010, putting humans at the center. Between 2011, the date of the creation of their company Adrien M & Claire B, and 2015, they notably created ten installations entitled “XYZT, Abstract Landscapes”, which were all presented together in 2016 at the Palais de la Découverte in Paris. A mysterious title at first glance, but which once decoded sounds like a manifesto of their research: “X (horizontality) Y (verticality) Z (depth) and T (time)”. Going beyond the space and temporality of the stage, connecting the material and immaterial worlds to reduce the divides between the living and the digital, these are the ambitions that they pursue in their creations, which they take the form of interactive exhibitions, shows, installations, plays or even performances.

From February 9 to August 25, 2024, the duo invites us to experience “En amour”, the title of the immersive and interactive installation-experience that they present at the Cité de la Musique, at the Philharmonie de Paris, in musical collaboration with Laurent Bardainne. A synesthetic creation which is part of the series of Rituals, designed by the company as spaces for experimentation that are both collective and intimate, placed under the aegis of a powerful gentleness. During a long interview, Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne retrace their respective itineraries until they met, before immersing us in the making of their four-handed art.

The Sound of the Day: Johann Sebastian Bach – Florian Noack, “Concerto for four harpsichords in A minor BWV 1065 (after Vivaldi), III. Allegro”

How much can you add without losing the essence? This is the question that drives Florian Noack when he transcribes any musical work. In the tradition of Franz Liszt, who notably adapted Beethoven’s nine symphonies for solo piano, the Belgian pianist values the integrity of the original when he undertakes an adaptation. He carried out this exercise in an album published in 2014 and dedicated to the Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov. In a new album, I Wanna Be Like You, published on the La Dolce Vita label, it explores new territories of transcription and paraphrase. If the Russians are always in the spotlight, Florian Noack also looked towards Tielman Susato, musical figure of the city of Antwerp during the Renaissance, or even that of Disney’s Jungle Book. With a certain taste for the abyss, he opens his album with a transcription for solo piano of the Concerto for four harpsichords by Johann Sebastian Bach, itself written after the Concerto for four violins by Antonio Vivaldi. Here is the third movement, Allegro.
