Florida man’s worsening migraines linked to tapeworm eggs found in his brain
Neurologists document rare case of tapeworm infection with severe migraines
TAMPA, Fla. — A 52-year-old Florida man’s battle with worsening migraines has been traced back to tapeworm eggs found in his brain, according to a study published in the American Journal of Case Reports.
Gradual increase in migraines
The man reported chronic migraines that gradually became more severe over a four-month period. While he did not present with common neurological symptoms, a CT scan revealed the presence of a cluster of cysts in his brain.
Clues pointing to neurocysticercosis
The CT scan led neurologists to consider the possibility of neurocysticercosis, a rare parasitic infection of the brain strongly linked to pork consumption. Most neurocysticercosis patients in the U.S. are individuals from regions where the disease is prevalent, particularly in Latin America.
Link to pork consumption
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that neurocysticercosis is contracted when humans ingest eggs present in the feces of individuals with taeniasis, the pork tapeworm. The CDC also highlights that countries with a ban on pork have virtually nonexistent rates of neurocysticercosis.
Accidental consumption of undercooked bacon
In the Florida man’s case, he hadn’t recently traveled or had any close contact with pigs. Neurologists speculate that his lifelong preference for soft bacon may have led to unintentional consumption of undercooked bacon, posing a theoretical risk for neurocysticercosis through autoinoculation.
Autoinoculation and disease transfer
Autoinoculation occurs when a person transfers a disease from one part of their body to another. The researchers concluded that the man contracted the parasite through improper handwashing after having taeniasis himself.
Proper treatment and prevalence of neurocysticercosis
The man received treatment with antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory medications. The CDC reports approximately 1,000 hospitalizations with neurocysticercosis in the U.S. each year, with an average cost of $37,600 per hospitalization. The disease is most commonly reported in California, Illinois, New York, Oregon, and Texas.
