At this time, rhinovirus (Rhinovirus) is spreading in both children and adults, after the Covid virus and influenza. The strange thing is Rhinovirus does not only affect the upper respiratory tract. Makes people sick with common colds like before Nowadays, rhinoviruses are more virulent. Some people cough so much they can’t sleep. Some people have red eyes. Some people have rhinovirus that attacks their lower respiratory tract, going down into their trachea and into their lungs. Can cause pneumonia.
A 90 year old female patient has a fever, runny nose, sore throat, a lot of coughing, sputum for 5 days, not tired, living close to her 70 year old son who is sick with the flu. The patient has congenital disease, high blood pressure, fat, kidney disease, does not drink alcohol, does not smoke.
Physical examination: temperature 38 degrees Celsius, oxygen level normal 96%, lung auscultation normal. Sent for genetic code testing of 22 strains, only one rhinovirus was found.
A lung X-ray showed white patches on the lower right lung (see picture).
Blood was drawn and white blood cells were normal. Blood cultures were sent and no bacteria were found.
Diagnosis: Pneumonia caused by rhinovirus (Rhinovirus).
Low dose steroids were given for 5 days. The patient improved, no mucus, no sore throat, no fever, cough decreased, lung x-rays reduced white spots (see picture). Stayed in the hospital for a total of 5 days.
Follow up after leaving the hospital. In 5 days, the coughing decreased a lot. On x-ray lungs the white matter on the lower right side decreased even more (see picture).
