[Yahoo News Report]Wild boars appear from time to time in Hong Kong. The Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, responded to a written question from a member of the Legislative Council today (13th). Hong Kong received a total of 1,128 reports of wild boars or nuisance last year, including a total of 1,128 reports of wild boars injuring people. 9 cases, a 75% decrease from 36 cases in the previous year. At the same time, an average of 41 wild boars were humanely processed per month last year, a 70% increase from the previous year. From 2021 to February this year, a total of 910 wild boars were humanely disposed of.

Tse Chin-wan pointed out that the area with the most reports of wild boar sightings was Tai Po District, with a total of 197 cases last year, followed by Sai Kung District and Sha Tin District. Statistics from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department show that there were approximately 1,360 wild boars in Hong Kong last year, a decrease of 26% compared with the previous year.

Hong Kong golf club kills 23 wild boars

Tse Chin-wan said that there were 40 reports of wild boar appearing in the North District last year, mainly found near farmland. The founder of the department will maintain communication with farmers, golf clubs, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, etc., such as suggesting the addition of fences, infrared cameras, Animal traps, etc. The document also added that the Hong Kong Golf Club at the Fanling Golf Course holds a special license to capture wild boars. It has captured 23 wild boars since last year, and all of them were handled humanely.

As for law enforcement, as of last year, the government had prosecuted 30 people for illegally feeding wild pigs, 17 of whom were convicted and fined ranging from NT$500 to NT$1,000.

Hong Kong implemented the “Wild Boar Capture and Contraception/Relocation Program” from 2017 to November 2021, during which a total of 1,092 wild boars were captured, of which 458 received contraceptive vaccines or sterilization surgeries. However, the Department pointed out that “the speed of contraception and sterilization is far behind the reproduction speed of wild boars.” Even if wild boars are relocated to the countryside, they will still return to urban areas to demand food from people. Therefore, the Fisheries and Conservation Department will start in November 2021. Humane disposal methods replace “capture and contraception/relocation plans”.
