They await the constitution of a transitional council in Haiti – 2024-03-13 19:20:22

The Caribbean Community (Caricom) recognized this Tuesday the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, and reported that a Transitional Presidential Council and the appointment of an interim prime minister will be established.

Once formed, this Council will appoint a new prime minister. Ariel Henry has promised to resign following the formation of the Presidential Council, according to an announcement by the president of the Caricom Conference of Heads of Government, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who led these rounds of discussions.

This 7-member Presidential Council will be composed of a representative of the following political organizations: the January 30 Collective, the Montana Agreement, Fanmi Lavalas, the structures (EDE, RED and Historical Commitment), the December 21 agreement currently in force, Pitit Desalin of Moïse Jean-Charles and a representative of the private business sector.

The religious sector and civil society organizations were invited to present one representative each to the Presidential Council as an advisor or observer.

During the meeting, in which Brazil, Canada, France, Mexico, the United Nations and the United States also participated, the creation of the Council was agreed.

Political and civil society organizations have 24 hours to present the names of their representatives to the Presidential Council. Once formed, this Presidential Council will enjoy all the powers of a president of the Republic, according to the Constitution, will appoint a Prime Minister and will proceed to form the transitional government.

After the formation of the Presidential Council, the next internal battle will be for the election of the President of the Presidential Council.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the United States will contribute up to $300 million to promote the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.
