Starfield leaves everyone with a personal experience. Someone passed by and already forgot. Others strive to explore every corner. And there are those who still immerse themselves in Starfield to evaluate the game from a design point of view. We recently wrote about how one gamer noted the impressive design of the in-game interfaces with all their switches and displays. Now, one gamer has commented on how cool the toilets and bathrooms look in Starfield.
Redditor Mattgyvercom recently shared his assessment of Starfield toilets on the r/Starfield subreddit, saying that the quality of the design is so impressive that he captured at least 100 different bathrooms during his playthrough. And he shared a selection of 20 screenshots, challenging others to guess where they were taken.
Mattgyvercom praised the game’s designers, suggesting that whoever was given “toilet duty” went above and beyond to create some truly remarkable spaces.
Just a fan of interior design, and Starfield spared no expense. Some game designer got stuck on toilet duty and probably thought, “…I’ll show them. I’ll show them all!”
Another gamer noted that bathroom design is rarely mentioned as a criterion for a good game.
It is worth noting that in one of the interviews, Starfield lead artist Istvan Peli and lead animator Rick Vicens said that the entire environment of the game was filled in manually. While there’s a system that randomly generates important game items like ammo and healing items, everything else—from mugs to coffee stains to floor scratches—is placed intentionally and with a personal touch.
And lead artist Nate Purkeypile said:
Sets are best when artists do the work and make decisions about what should go where… I believe there is no better source material than what you see in the real world.
Perkipile also shared that he and his team often take inspiration from their surroundings, for example, the piping and cables in the Zenimax building influenced some of the ceilings in Starfield. The artists even added personal Easter eggs to the game environment that only those in the know can solve.
While most players are impressed with the level of detail in Starfield’s toilets and bathrooms, some have pointed out inconsistencies in the placement of toilets in certain locations. One user noted that there are no showers at Constellation, while another questioned where employees go to the bathroom in Aquila City or Neon.
