As part of the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Law – enacted in 2021 -, since February 12, the new energy efficiency standards for the fleet of light vehicles came into effect.
This regulation seeks to promote the renewal of the fleet with more efficient vehicles that contribute to the reduction of fossil fuel consumption and lower our greenhouse gas emissions.
By incorporating this policy, Chile is positioned as one of the leading countries in the region in terms of vehicle energy efficiency, approaching the standards required in Europe, the United States or Japan.
The Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, pointed out that “our country has been working for almost two decades to improve its energy efficiency standards. In 2007, the first labels for incandescent bulbs and refrigerators were implemented. To date, a total of 26 product labels have been developed, which mainly cover appliances with the highest electricity consumption, gas and firewood. The implementation of energy efficiency standards is a constant process that we have developed as a country and the vehicle energy efficiency standard is a new step on this path.”
“From the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications through the Vehicle Control and Certification Center (3CV) we will have the mission of preparing an energy efficiency report every time a vehicle model wishes to be marketed in the country, said report will be delivered twice. per year, as established by the Law, to the Superintendence of Electricity and Fuels (SEC), the body that will finally determine whether or not they comply with what is established in the standard and the eventual fines for non-compliance,” explained Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz.
In a first stage, the standard will require an average reference performance of 18.8 km/l of gasoline equivalent of the total vehicle fleet entering the country annually in the period 2024 – 2026. The measurement will depend on the average weight of the vehicles that enter the country, so each of the importers or brand representatives in Chile must comply with a standard that could be different from said figure.
For the proper implementation of the standard and its compliance, a Support Table for the Implementation of the Energy Efficiency Standard will be established, which will be made up of representatives of the Government and the industry, to provide certainty regarding the energy efficiency standard for light vehicles. and the entire process associated with monitoring compliance.
