International Committee of Art History (CIHA) 36th Congress in Lyon 2024: Materiality Theme and Registrations Open

The International Committee of Art History (CIHA) is organizing its 36th congress in Lyon in June 2024. This scientific and cultural meeting of global scope aims to share and disseminate research through the bringing together of art history and heritage communities around a unifying theme.

This year, the subject “Materiality” was chosen. Inherent in the design, production, interpretation and conservation of artifacts in all cultures and all periods, these two notions of matter and materiality have nevertheless given rise to several theoretical challenges in recent decades. This theme therefore offers the opportunity for fruitful intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue on issues that promote a transversal perspective at the intersection of approaches and methodologies.

This international committee will host 93 parallel sessions over 6 conference days, from June 23 to 28. The sessions are divided between 14 themes: Thinking about Matter; The Materials of the Work; The Art Factory; Economic Factors; Ecology and Politics; Material Anthropology of Work; Imagination of Materials; Dematerialization/Rematerialization; New Materialities; Immateriality/Ephemeral; Patrimonialization; Material History of Objects, History of Conservation; Care Policy and Ethics.

Registrations are now open. All participants must register online. Fees are progressive until June 2024: it is recommended to register as early as possible, before March 31, 2024. They include access to the opening ceremony, all sessions, the Book Fair and reservations for visits and excursions planned during the stay. More information here.

The 36th CIHA congress is organized under the aegis of the French Committee for the History of Art (CFHA) in a partnership between the CFHA, the National Institute of Art History (INHA), the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Rhône-Alpes Historical Research Laboratory (LARHRA CNRS UMR 5190).
