Patients who have had intestinal surgery can obtain information about their health via the app pass along. This includes appetite, stool, food and drink intake and fever. Up to ten days after the operation, patients complete a number of questions about how they feel twice a day, at 9 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Every day, patients receive a notification in the app when the questionnaire is ready for them to complete. Ten days after the operation, questions and measurements no longer appear in the app. The app then only sends a message for the check-up appointment with the surgeon.
Care after intestinal surgery
Employees of the monitoring center of the Catharina Hospital check the measured values. And if necessary, they contact the patient and the specialist. After intestinal surgery, patients also receive a device to take home with which the oxygen level in the blood can be measured.
Previously, home monitoring was introduced for patients with corona/influenza, COPD, gestational diabetes and heart failure after a cerebral infarction. These developments in home monitoring are part of ‘Care with you’. The seven Santeon hospitals, which also include the Catharina Hospital, have jointly received transformation funds under this heading to scale up and accelerate the use of hybrid care. Home monitoring of intestinal operations was previously implemented at the Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital and St. Antonius Hospital.
Home recovery with app
The use of apps certainly contributes to a faster recovery of patients. For example, research shows that patients who use the ikHerstel app after abdominal surgery get back on their feet faster. Patients who have had major abdominal surgery recover faster than patients who do not use the app. Research among 355 patients from 11 Dutch hospitals shows that they recovered after 7 weeks instead of 9 weeks. The results of the research led by Chantal den Bakker of the Amsterdam UMC have been published in the medical journal The Lancet Digital Health.
