The State and the City of New York launched a joint operation to identify and eliminate so-called ‘ghost cars’, that is, cars that practically They cannot be tracked by traffic cameras and toll readers because of their falsified or altered license plates.
Only this Monday, in a “move” that included several municipal and state agencies, were they confiscated 73 cars and 282 citations were issued and eight people were arrested.
This task force carried out traffic safety actions at three river crossings entering Manhattan: the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln Tunnel
While the illegal practice of falsifying or altering plates is not new, the crime proliferated during the pandemic and drivers masked their identities using counterfeit temporary paper plates to evade detection.
The fake “temporary tags” appeared to be issued by dealers outside of New York, making them difficult to verify.
In some cases, New York City thugs use this cloak of anonymity to commit more serious violent crimes, such as hit-and-runs, robberies, and shootings.
“Perhaps these vehicles do not have license plates, but we have his number and will go after anyone we think is hard to track. “Criminals have been purchasing fake or paper license plates online to avoid tolls and fines, as well as evade liability for serious crimes, but we are stopping them,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“If you try to evade the tolls at any of the crossings in the region, you will be caught and prosecuted. We are using methods of application of the unique and innovative laws that we now have at our disposal to find those who do not pay” noted the director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Rick Cotton.
