Brahim Diaz Citizenship Decision: Will Real Madrid Star Play for Spain or Morocco?

Brahim Díaz was born in Málaga, his father is from Morocco and his mother is Spanish. After the Real Madrid footballer acquired the citizenship of an African country, he had to decide which national team jersey he would wear for the rest of his career.

He made his debut for the Spanish national team on 8 June 2021 in a friendly match against Lithuania, in which he managed to score, while it was his only appearance for the national team. FIFA rules allow players to change national teams as long as they have played less than three matches for their country’s senior national team before reaching the age of 21.

However, according to Marca, the Spanish Football Federation has not yet received any official notification of Brahim Díaz’s choice to represent Morocco. The decision of an offensive midfielder or a winger is said to have come after Spain coach Luis de la Fuente ignored him.

Morocco have been trying to convince him to join their team for five years. Coach Walid Regragui has traveled to Milan and Madrid several times this season to negotiate with the 24-year-old midfielder. In addition to him, he was also visited by the president of the Moroccan Football Federation and several politicians.

Brahim Díaz started his career at Manchester City’s academy, from where he joined Real Madrid in 2019. Within 18 months, he played 21 matches in the “white ballet” jersey and subsequently moved to AC Milan on loan in the summer of 2020.

He returned to the Santiago Bernabéu last year and although he spent most of his time on the bench under Carlo Ancelotti, he made 32 appearances, scoring 8 goals.

Morocco, who reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, will face Angola and Mauritania in friendlies later this month. Coach Walid Regragui is also expected to include Brahim Díaz in the squad.
