But in September 2017, Valdez followed Aquino and the daughter to the apartment’s fire escape, armed with a broken bottle. According to testimony, he grabbed the girl by her neck. He “was suffocating her and wanted to throw her down the fire escape. He was going to cut her throat, but she raised her arm and he cut her.” A neighbor who ran into the apartment to help hit the attacker in the head with a lamp, leaving him unconscious.
