“Great Music Award” presentation ceremony at the Latvian National Opera
The Latvian National Opera and Ballet took place on Tuesday “Big Music Awards” presentation ceremony, in which laureates in eight categories were announced, informed Indra Vilipson, representative of the award.

Composer Vilnis Šmīdbergs and pianist Arnis Zandmanis received the award in the “Lifetime Contribution” category. On the other hand, in the “Young Musician of the Year” category, the singer Katrīna Paula Felsberg won the laurels.
In the category “New work of the year” the laureate was Jura Carlson’s symphonic vision “Mysterious Garden”. The premiere of the work took place on December 2 in Liepaja concert hall “Lielais Dzintars”. The piece was performed by Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and conductor Guntis Kuzma.

In the category “For excellent interpretation” the award was won by violist Ilze Kļava for the performance of the viola concerto by composer Pēteras Vaskas on April 15 in the concert hall “Cēsis” together with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and conductor Juha Kangas. In the “Ensemble of the Year” category, the silver statuette went to “Trio Palladio”, consisting of Eva Bindere, Kristīne Blaumane and Reinis Zariņš.
On the other hand, the laureate in the category “Chamber performance of the year” is Anna Veismane’s chamber performance “Yellow sidewalk” in the Dzintari concert hall, in which Guna Zariņa, Rihards Plešanovs, Jānis Semjonovs, Maija Zandberga participated. The event was organized by “Dzintari Concert Hall”.
In the “Concert of the Year” category, the concert performance of Richard Wagner’s opera “Siegfried” on July 29 in the “Cēsis” concert hall was nominated in honor of the laureate. Soloists, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Tarmo Peltokoski took part in the event. The award “For outstanding performance throughout the year” was received by the Latvian Radio big band.
The “audience sympathy” vote on the “Delfi” portal took place from February 18 to March 8. The nominee in the “Young Musician of the Year” category – trombonist Vadims Dmitrievs – received the most audience votes.
Addressing the audience at the Latvian National Opera and Ballet House, State President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that today we have a celebration of excellence in Latvian music. “The big music award is usually a certain reference point. We look back on the past year. We appreciate what has been done,” said the President.
“But the Grand Music Prize is also a spark for a new idea – something new and beautiful. I am especially pleased that tonight I have the happiness and honor to present the award in the category “Young Musician of the Year”. These are people who are already great. These are people who have already started their journey in music. However, excellence is unthinkable without quality education, without safe education and, I want to emphasize this, a safe environment at school, university and workplace,” said Rinkēvičs in his speech.
The “Great Music Award” is the highest Latvian state award in music. The award is organized by VSIA “Latvijas koncerti” in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.
The “Major Music Awards 2023” jury consisted of chairman of the jury, conductor, composer, Jāzeps Vītolas Latvian Music Academy (JVLMA) professor Andris Vecumnieks, musicologist, “Latvijas Radio 3”-“Klasika” journalist Ilze Medne, musicologist, director of “Musica Baltica” publishing house Solvita Sējāne, musicologist, doctor of arts Ilze Šarkovska-Liepiņa, musicologist, JVLMA emeritus professor Boriss Avramecs, founder and manager of the jazz music publishing house “Jersika Records” Mareks Ameriks and musicologist, journalist, publicist Armands Znotiņš.
