Nicephorus I was a Byzantine cleric, Patriarch of Constantinople from 806 to 815. Born during the reign of Emperor Constantine V Copronymus, he began his career as an imperial notary. Participated in the church council convened by Empress Irina in 787. He then left his service, founded a monastery and retired there.
After the death of Patriarch Tarasius, Nicephorus was elected Patriarch of Constantinople. When under Leo V the Armenian the iconoclasts once again gained the upper hand, Nicephorus came into conflict with the emperor. As one of the most prominent leaders of the icon worshipers, in May 815 he was deposed from the patriarchal throne and sent into exile, where he spent 14 years and rested in June 829.
In 847, on the initiative of Patriarch Methodius, his ashes were brought to Constantinople and buried in the church “St. Apostles”. For his merits in the fight against iconoclasts, he was canonized. Several works of Patriarch Nicephorus have reached us, of which his Chronography and Short History are particularly important for Bulgarian history.
