Former lawmaker Lee Hye-hoon defeated lawmaker Ha Tae-kyung in the runoff election for the People Power Party’s Jungseong-dong, Seoul, which attracted attention as a confrontation between leading politicians, and advanced to the finals. In addition, Rep. Lee Yong, known as ‘Jjinyun (true pro-Yoon Seok faction)’, and Rep. Kim Hyung-dong, ‘Chin Han (pro-Han Dong-Hoon faction)’ were also confirmed to be nominated in Hanam Gap, Gyeonggi Province, and Andong Yecheon, Gyeongbuk Province, respectively.
The People Power Party Nomination Management Committee announced the results of the primary elections in 10 constituencies on the 12th. Former lawmaker Lee, who served three terms in Seocho-gap, Seoul, can now dream of a ‘brilliant revival’ by running for a fourth term in Jungseong-dong, Seoul. Former lawmaker Lee, who is close to former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, also ran for the difficult district of Dongdaemun-eul in Seoul at the party’s request in the 21st general election, but lost. In the Democratic Party of Korea, a primary is underway in Seoul’s Jungseong-dong district between incumbent lawmaker Park Seong-joon and former lawmaker Jeong Ho-jun, the son of Jeong Dae-cheol, president of the Constitutional Council of the Republic of Korea.
According to Rep. Ha’s Facebook page, in the first primary, Rep. Ha received 46.01%, comfortably beating former Rep. Lee with 29.71% and former Minister of SMEs and Startups Lee Young with 25.9%. In the bilateral runoff, Rep. Ha won 50.87% and former Rep. Lee 49.13%, but in the case of former Rep. Lee, an additional point (5%) for women was added, leading to the final 51.58%, ahead of Rep. Ha by 0.71 percentage points.
Rep. Lee Yong also won against Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education Superintendent Kim Ki-yoon and Yoon Wan-chae, former Hanam mayoral candidate from the Grand National Party. Representative Lee will face off against former Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae, who is running for Hanam-gap, Gyeonggi Province, as the Democratic Party’s candidate. Rep. Kim Hyeong-dong, chief of staff to Chairman Han Dong-hoon of the People Power Party’s Emergency Response Committee, also defeated former Seoul City Administrative Vice Mayor Kim Eui-seung.
Rep. Kang Dae-sik of the pro-Yoo Seung-min faction defended his constituency (Daegu Dong-gun Wi-eul) by defeating the challenge of former Daegu Dong-gu mayor Lee Jae-man of the pro-Park Geun-hye faction, who was at the center of the nomination crisis during the 19th general election. Han Ki-ho, a three-term lawmaker from Gangwon-do, Chuncheon, Cheorwon and Hwacheon Yang-gu, also defeated former G1 Broadcasting CEO Heo In-gu in the primary.
In Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (Buul-Gyeong), Kwon Tong-il, former policy adviser to the Minister of Education, and Park Seong-ho, former administrative governor of South Gyeongsang Province, faced off in Gimhae-gap, Gyeongsangnam-do, and former Deputy Governor Park won the nomination. In Seo-dong, Busan, the three-way primary was narrowed to a bilateral runoff between lawyer Kwak Gyu-taek and former President Kim Young-sam’s grandson Kim In-gyu, an administrator in the Office of Senior Secretary to the President for Political Affairs.
In Gyeonggi-do, former Ansan member Seo Jeong-hyeon won as the party council chairman in Ansan-eul, Gyeonggi-do, Daejin University professor Seok-hwan Jang won in Goyang-eul, Gyeonggi-do, and former Paju-eul party council chairman Han Gil-ryong won in Paju-eul, Gyeonggi-do.
