Today, Monday (11/03), King Charles’ 615-word taped Commonwealth Day speech was screened in front of 2,000 people at Westminster Abbey. “It warms my heart,” says the king, “the Commonwealth has been a constant throughout my life, a precious source of strength, inspiration and pride,” he adds.
The celebration has been held annually since 1972 and marks the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth, a union of 54 member states with a total population of 2.4 billion citizens.
The King is currently continuing his state duties from home, having been medically advised to temporarily step aside from public duties while he receives cancer treatment.
Although clearly overwhelmed, King Charles said in his message: “Having recently celebrated my 75th birthday, it warms my heart to reflect on the way the Commonwealth has been a constant throughout my life – a precious source of strength, inspiration and of pride”.
“In the past weeks I have been deeply moved by your thoughts and wishes for my health, and I for my part can continue to serve you to the best of my ability,” said the King of Britain.
