Ittrich rushes over and immediately recognizes the situation: The former France international fainted and swallowed his tongue, threatens to suffocate. “If someone is lying there like that, you have to act quickly,” Ittrich said later. “I have experienced many situations like this. The tongue was in the back and when it’s out again, you start breathing again and you’re there again.”

The Mainz players also recognized the danger their teammate was in. They immediately thanked Ittrich for his help – one in particular: “Nadiem Amiri immediately hugged me because he realized it was an explosive situation,” reported the referee.

Referee Ittrich, a police officer by profession, had another thing that was important: “This shouldn’t rest on the police officer, but on each of us. In everyday life, situations can always happen in which someone needs help,” he made clear after the game.
