A 20-year-old Amsterdam resident is a suspect in a major online fraud case. The man allegedly made his account available for transactions from the rogue webshop MediaXXL. At least 500 victims ordered electronics on the site that were never delivered.
The police have been receiving reports about the site since the beginning of this year. According to the police, the webshop had a professional appearance and the products were cheaper than competitors. The site also received good reviews. In total, more than 500 people transferred around 270,000 euros to the Amsterdam resident’s account.
After interrogating the man, the police tracked down three men (two 26-year-olds and a 31-year-old) from Beverwijk and searched their homes and a business premises in Heiloo. 44,000 euros in bank balance, two cars and luxury items have been seized. Two apartments belonging to the suspects have also been seized.
The three arrested men are still in custody. The police suspect that they have also scammed people through other websites. The 20-year-old Amsterdam resident is not in custody, but is a suspect in the case.
