Rwandan President Paul Kagame to Meet DRC’s Tshisekedi Over Eastern Congo Crisis: Angolan Mediation

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has agreed to meet his Democratic Republic of Congo counterpart Félix Tshisekedi over the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

This agreement comes at the end of a meeting organized in Luanda, Angola, between Mr. Kagame and Angolan President João Lourenço, mediator of the African Union (AU) in the crisis in the DRC.

Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio said both Rwanda and DR Congo had agreed to hold the meeting, ministerial delegations from both parties working to develop the plan.

President Kagame’s trip to Angola follows a similar visit by Mr Tshisekedi to Luanda last month, during which it was announced that the DR Congo leader had agreed to meet his Rwandan counterpart.

The only condition on the Congolese side, President Tshisekedi demanded the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese territory before meeting President Kagame.

Fighting between M23 rebels and Congolese forces has intensified in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, displacing more than 100,000 people in recent weeks, according to the UN.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels, which Kigali denies.
