Faced with this observation, the Pabok Unemployment Action Movement will send leather gifts to the Federal Minister of Employment and Workforce Development.
“We are going to send him old worn wallets and old empty bags too,” says the coordinator of the Pabok Unemployment Action Movement, Nadine Mongeon.
This action aims to draw the attention of Minister Randy Boissonault to the situation
that seasonal workers currently experience.
“It’s really symbolic. It is with the idea of making him understand that there are employment insurance recipients who have no longer received benefits since January, so their pockets and wallets are empty,” she illustrates.
According to the coordinator of the organization, between 200 to 300 people from the Rocher-Percé and Côte-de-Gaspé MRCs are currently without money.
“Haute-Gaspésie is probably less obvious. Nor does Baie-des-Chaleurs because there were more who worked in tourism, in construction or things like that and they managed to do well. But it was mainly those who were in the factories,” continues Ms. Mongeon.
And with the season to forget in the peach processing sector, several workers were unable to qualify for the pilot project set up last fall by Ottawa. The federal government extended four additional weeks of employment insurance benefits, to the five already existing, in order to reduce the famous black hole.
“It just started last September 10. All those who finished before September 10 and who had fewer hours found themselves supplementing with water. They didn’t manage to get those extra four weeks. And these are people who should have had it,” says Ms. Mongeon.
Unemployed rights groups are now hoping to receive good news in the next federal budget.
Employment insurance reform has been impatiently awaited since 2015.
“We would like the conservatives to finally understand the logic of our demands. Instead of harming us, it might help us. But we don’t expect too much of that. »
