An elderly man who had disappeared from his home in Camagüey for six years was found wandering in the streets of Cienfuegos, thanks to the help of the community on social networks, which ended up doing the work of the authorities.
According to the Facebook profile ‘Las Cosas de Fernanda’, the old man’s family never stopped sharing photographs of the missing person on their networks, which allowed someone to eventually recognize him and contact his loved ones.
The elderly man was located on February 29 in the Hermanas Girall neighborhood. According to the information shared, the old man, who suffers from several diseases and senility, moved through several provinces such as Pinar del Río, Havana and Matanzas during the last six years.
After his identity was confirmed, the elderly man was detained by local residents, who contacted medical professionals to transfer him to the ‘Gustavo Aldereguía’ Hospital, as he was found in a weakened state.
“Right now, the authorities are linking the girl with the social worker who cares for the elderly in the hospital and us. We can now return home, let’s hope that the doctors, the material and God also do her work and that the young girl who contacted us enjoys her grandpa and takes good care of him,” the publication adds.
The old man’s granddaughter, identified as Geidy Beatriz Ortiz Escalona, indicated that she feels very grateful for the support received from the community, because, if the community had not mobilized, the old man would still be missing.
The case generated a bit of controversy among the comments, as several Internet users consider it unforgivable that he could spend six years on the streets without the Castro authorities locating him, especially due to the high level of control they maintain over the town.
In that sense, they consider that it is likely that possible negligence on the part of the authorities has caused him to spend more time than necessary without being found.
In recent months, the number of cases of missing people that are reported on social networks have increased, this due to the large number of citizens that are on them today, and which becomes an information network that the people I didn’t have it years ago, when the Internet was not allowed on the Island.
