LIVE Techno – Many scientists predict that an asteroid or meteor will one day hit Earth and create havoc. For example, the Asteroid Apophis, which is rumored to be hitting Earth in 2029.
However, as quoted from the site BGRscientists confirm that this giant asteroid will not come into direct contact with Earth so there is very little chance of a collision, if the path or orbit of the Asteroid Apophis changes because another asteroid hits the space rock.
For your information, every day there are thousands of asteroids or meteors that cross Earth, some of which have the potential to hit our planet.
About 90-95 percent of what falls to Earth burns out and disintegrates when it passes through the atmosphere. While 5-10 percent ‘survives’ entering Earth, the majority falls into the sea and uninhabited places.
Why are the majority of asteroids or meteors that fall to Earth shattered into pieces? But, did you know that Earth has a sky shield or defense system that allows it to avoid being hit by foreign objects from outer space.
The layer of atmosphere that causes asteroids to erode completely is called the mesosphere, which stretches between 50 and 90 km above the Earth’s surface.
The mesosphere is sandwiched between the stratosphere below and the thermosphere above and functions as an asteroid shield. Asteroid friction in the mesosphere will burn the asteroid into small pieces, even into dust.
The mesosphere is the second main layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. The temperature in the mesosphere can reach minus 150 degrees Celsius. When an asteroid or meteor hits the mesosphere, the air in front of it is compressed very quickly. When a gas is compressed, its temperature rises.
This causes the meteors to become very hot, even up to 1,650 degrees Celsius, and most of them will erode completely before hitting Earth, although some of them also manage to hit Earth.
Mesosphere comes from the Greek word ‘mesossphaira’ which means middle layer. And therefore it is called the middle atmosphere because the mesosphere is located in the middle of all layers.
