Cuban mathematician Yusnier Viera broke a world calculation record, after getting the most calendar dates right in one minute, calculating exactly which day of the week they fell on.
This March 9, the native of Bejucal appeared at Miami-Dade College, where he was made to calculate 159 dates between the years 1600 and 2100, all in one minute, which he achieved correctly.
In exclusive statements for Cuban NewspaperViera explained that he was able to break the previous record of 140 dates calculated in one minute, for which he feels very happy and satisfied.
“It is my pleasure to say that I am the new world record holder,” declared the 41-year-old Cuban.
To establish the mark, a group of judges gives Yusnier a calendar date, and he has to say which day of the week that date corresponded to. In a first attempt, the mathematical expert correctly answered 148 questions in that short space of time and for the fourth attempt he left the mark at 159.
The Cuban always showed exceptional ability in mathematics, particularly in mental calculation, which made him stand out in national and international mathematics competitions during his youth.
The Cuban has participated in Olympics and mathematics competitions in countries such as Germany and the United States, a bearer of exceptional talent, since for this calculation of dates he developed his own algorithm, which began in the 2000s in Cuba, before there was even the internet. .
He discovered that every 400 years everything repeats itself and that, in that period, there are always 97 leaps, which means that the number of days in the period is always a multiple of 7, according to what he told the British network. BBC.
From Sunday to Saturday, the days became for him numbers from zero to six, and the months became other key figures that were then added to the first digit.
“My algorithm is based on the 21st century. January 1, 2000 was a Saturday. So for me, January is going to be a 5, because that way when I add day 1 it will give me six and six means Saturday for me. So with each month I create a table that I carry in my head everywhere,” she confessed in that interview.
In 2005 he broke his first world record, guessing 42 dates, 100 less than his second mark, from 2018, where he guessed 141 dates without being wrong.
His ability to guess any given date in the Gregorian calendar has earned him the nickname ‘The Human Calendar’, and gave him the opportunity to leave Cuba, which made him realize that he no longer wanted to live there, so who has been working abroad for almost two decades.
Now, in addition to competing in mental calculation championships and breaking records, Viera has dedicated part of his career to education, working on the development of methods to improve mental calculation skills in students and adults, defending the importance of mathematics in education and daily life.
“Our mission is essentially to promote the tools so that all students can be successful, if we could at least change the life of one person, one student, with that we would be well rewarded,” explained Yusnier on the occasion of working on a mobile application. to promote teaching.
