Nina Derwael (23) has won bronze at the World Cup in Baku. The Olympic champion had already secured a ticket for the Olympic Games in the qualifications on Friday and was once again the best of the gymnasts who still had to fight in the beam final.

China’s Zhang Qingying opened the beam final and received the same score as in the qualifications: 14.233 (starting value 6.4). She immediately took a hefty option on the gold. The Italian Elisa Iorio fell from the beam during her exercise and fell again when landing. 10,933 (5.4) for her. Third was Japan’s Kaoruko Takezawa, who received 13.933 (5.7) on her international debut. Ting Hua-Tien from Taiwan was in the World Cup final for the third time in a row and scored 12.966 (5.2).

After the short break, 16-year-old Brazilian Andreza Lima needed corrections to get on beam and not fall on the dismount. 12,266 (5.4) was her share.

And then it was up to Nina Derwael. De Truiense had qualified for the final as fourth with a score of 13.433 and a starting value of 5.1. This time she was able to achieve a D-score of 5.5 and a total of 13.766, her best result of these three World Cups in Cairo, Cottbus and Baku. This put her in a provisional third place, with two gymnasts who still had to take action.

The Algerian Kaylia Nemour, child bridge prodigy, performed a much more difficult exercise (6.2) but ended up with a final score of 13.166. Finally, there was the Brazilian Julia Soares. She had entered the final in third place, but had to take a step when landing and ended up in fifth place.

Derwael finished third, but after eliminating all gymnasts who had previously qualified for Paris, she was the best for the third time. The three best scores at four World Cups count, and so Derwael ends up with the maximum of 90 points, without even participating in Doha.

Her three participations in the World Cups yielded gold and bronze, but above all the right to defend her Olympic title in Paris in July.
