Man Forced to Amputate After Frostbite Incident – The Shocking Incident That Shocked Nurses

VG warns of strong images in this case.

– The nurses were in shock! But no one fainted.

Stig André Henriksen had wounds to his leg and coal-black toes when he was admitted to the hospital in Tromsø on 2 January. A friend happened to pass by and saw Stig lying in the snow outside the door of his own home.

– The feet were full of gangrene. Gangrene is decay due to a lack of blood supply, and most often occurs in the feet. Frostbite is a common cause of gangrene. . The damage was beyond repair.

Northern Lights mentioned the matter first.

Stig was only going out the door for a walk when he was unlucky and tripped on the doorstep. From there he couldn’t get up and was lying in and out of consciousness, he says.

He has no idea how many hours he lay there before his friend found him and alerted the ambulance. By then the frost had taken hold of his feet.

– It was freezing cold!

Before you read on: VG will once again warn against the release of stronger images in this case!

– Must see the positive

The doctors at UNN tried hard to save Stig’s feet. But on 20 January, a serious senior doctor entered the hospital room.

– I understood that there was something they were going to tell. Then the senior doctor said I had to amputate.

– I agreed with that, but I was a bit perplexed when they entered church time on a Sunday morning, he laughs.

The leg below his knee is now gone. The doctors also had to take the toes of the other foot. On the heel, skin from his thigh is sewn, in the hope that the wound will heal.

– You are very positive?

– You have to see the positive in it. Done is done. Now it’s just a matter of training. I have been given exercises that I can do on my own. It’s amazing what you can achieve.

But Stig is prepared that there may be a long way to go, and that things may not be exactly as before.

– Life can change. After all, there are some things one speculates about how to do with a prosthesis, such as pulling the boat down the shore. I like going for walks and swing dancing and all sorts of things. So I hope they can make a swing prosthesis.

Doctor Daniel Sørli tells VG that gangrene is not that common in young and healthy people.

– It takes extreme cold or major accidents for gangrene to develop, for example a climbing accident on Mount Everest. But for the elderly and the sick who have poor circulation, it is not so unusual. And in extreme cases where one is exposed to cold, it can happen. If you have diabetes or cardiovascular disease, there is a greater chance of developing it, he says.

– Almost too much waiting

After a few days in the hospital, Stig was discharged from the hospital and transported to the health center in Tromsø. He has been there for 25 days.

– Here at the health center, I feel very well. There is lovely food, great rooms, electric beds… Everything is arranged for a great stay, he says and adds,

– All you have to do is pull the cord, and the staff will come to help. It is really nice.

He says he will probably have to stay at the health center for at least a month. In his room at the health center, Easter flowers have started to pour in.

– It’s yellow roses and daffodils.

And even at the health center he manages to stay busy.

– There is a lot going on. Last week was communion. The wine tasted absolutely lovely.

Every afternoon he plays yatzy with two new girlfriends in their 80s.

– I could have been their son. But as I’ve always said: Age is just a number. And if I say something on the edge, they grin to death.

– There will almost be too much waiting. There is so much good food, and so much during the day.

The favorite is meatballs with pea stew and brown sauce, he says.

– It’s really good.
