The center-right coalition emerged as the winner in the first exit poll in the Portuguese elections. A partnership of a large center-right party and two smaller conservative parties, which participated under the name Democratic Alliance, is estimated to receive between 29 and 33 percent of the votes.
The Socialist Party, which won an absolute majority in the previous elections, can count on between 25 and 29 percent of the votes. The elections were brought forward after Prime Minister Costa’s socialist government collapsed in November.
The reason for this was an investigation into alleged corruption with large investment projects for, among other things, the extraction of lithium, in which Costa’s chief of staff was considered a suspect. Costa resigned after a search of his official residence.
The radical right-wing party Chega appears to come third, with between 14 and 17 percent of the votes, according to the exit poll. In the previous elections, the party received 7.2 percent of the votes.
Nearly 52 percent of Portuguese voters cast a vote today. This meant that election turnout was significantly higher than three years ago. At the time it was slightly lower than 46 percent.
