13-Year-Old Arrested in Connection to 14 Car Thefts in New Jersey, Linked to TikTok Trend

A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of being connected to more than a dozen car thefts in New Jersey over a span of just over two weeks.

The unidentified minor lives in Jersey City and was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. Monday after a woman told police she heard a loud noise before witnessing her Hyundai being taken away from the Islandview Court area.

After police arrived to investigate, officers noticed broken glass on the street where the car was parked along with another Hyundai that was unoccupied and had its engine running.

That second vehicle also had a broken side window, local police said, and the steering wheel appeared to have been tampered with. The car matched the description of one that had been stolen that same day and that agents had been looking for, he said. NBC News.

Shortly after, the car stolen from Islandview Court was seen driving at excess speed near there and when the police went to stop him the driver tried to escape, turned into a dead end, where He abandoned him and ran through a patio. Officers soon caught up to him and detained him.

After an investigation, Agents connected the suspect to a total of 14 vehicle thefts reported as of February 16, according to the police Bayonne. The stolen cars were brand Hyundai o Kia. All had the side windows broken and in some the steering wheels were tampered with.

In total, the child detained faces 41 charges including motor vehicle theft, breaking and entering, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
