Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s Sustainable Fashion Choices Steal the Spotlight

Crown Princess Mette-Marit (50) is known for choosing accessories carefully, and especially in recent years she has often chosen bags from suppliers other than the exclusive fashion houses.

The bags she appears with nowadays are either reused from many years ago, or bags from lesser-known manufacturers. And the common denominator for these is that they are often local crafts and preferably sustainable design.

Reacts: – Distasteful

For example, the crown princess wore a pink clutch from Me & Wilma to the presentation of the Nordic Council’s awards last autumn. A Norwegian company that wants to sell and promote good craftsmanship and fair trade primarily from the third world.

It was the website UFO No More who first wrote where the bag came from.

The castle made contact

The founders behind Me & Wilma are naturally honored by their generous customer.

– The bag was bought directly from Me & Wilma after we were contacted by the Castle. It was the interest in sustainability and the story behind our products that led Slottet to us, Elin Zenker Aune tells Se og Hør.

She does not hide the fact that it means a lot that the Crown Princess is concerned with the right trade.

– It is wonderful that the Crown Princess chooses to be a role model for making good choices when shopping. And we are very grateful that there are people who want to contribute to shining a spotlight on how important the story behind each product is, and what the right trade can do for individuals and for the future, says the entrepreneur.

Secret guest list revealed

Together with Anne Norheim, she has started Me & Wilma.

– We focus on working with women’s groups and craft groups who are proud of their craft and produce goods with good quality and natural, sustainable materials. Fair trade is close to our hearts, she says.

Help from known profiles

The bag the Crown Princess carried is a handmade product from 4africa, which is a socially sustainable company in Kampala, Uganda. The paper is bought locally on the market and is glued and varnished with organic materials.

It is available in several colors and sizes and costs from NOK 899.

– 4africa is our heart child, and was established in 2011, among other things, by one of the founders behind Me & Wilma, and is a socially sustainable business that lifts women out of poverty by giving them a stable income through fairly paid work. Elevating women through work, mentoring and development has major ripple effects in the local environment and not least for the children and the future. The women in 4africa also have kindergarten places for their children through a collaboration with Norwegian kindergartens, which in turn provides a better basis for the future for the children as well. The children are our future! says the founder.

They have also had the help of well-known people who have traveled down there and contributed directly with design and training. Among others, designer Nina Jarebrink, artist Bjørg Thorhallsdottir and photographer Mona Nordøy.

A healthy contrast to the designer bags

The Crown Princess’s purchases indicate that craftsmanship and sustainability are close to her heart. The bag from 4africa and Me & Wilma is by no means the only bag with meaning she has in her collection.

In recent years, for example, she has bought a number of bags from the Italian Maria La Rosa. Sustainable bags, which are handmade on old chair looms in Italy. She also has several bags from the Mexican brand Paloma van den Akker, which are made by artisans in Yucatán using traditional techniques and natural fibers.

Fashion and beauty manager at KK, Ida Elise Eide Einarsdóttir, has also noticed the crown princess’s choice of bags:

– Mette-Marit increasingly makes well-thought-out style choices, I think. It’s a healthy contrast to all the designer bags. She is also clearly interested in needlework herself. Yes, also women’s rights. Such as the right to work. Fashion with meaning, in a way. It sends an important and correct signal, says the fashion expert to Se og Hør.
