Where is it going to happen?
The Academy Awards ceremony – now the 96th edition – will take place at the iconic Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 10. Good for about 3,400 seats.
When will the statues be awarded?
If you want to follow from our country, better set an alarm. The ceremony officially starts at 1 a.m. Belgian time (7 p.m. in LA). This will be preceded by a star parade on the red carpet. The show does not have a fixed closing hour, but usually lasts about three and a half hours.
Fact: the longest Oscar show ever – in 2002 – lasted four hours and 23 minutes. The shortest was in 1959 at an hour and 40 minutes.
How can you follow the Oscars?
From Flanders you can follow the show both on television and online. The award show will be broadcast on the pay TV channel Play More. Only the summary will be available for free on GoPlay on Thursday.
Anyone who lives in the States can follow everything on national TV. The exclusive TV rights this year belong to the ABC channel. For a look behind the scenes, visit the Oscars’ social media channels.
Have any Belgians been nominated for a statue?
Unfortunately. Unlike last year – when Lukas Dhont’s Close was even in a favorite role – no Belgian has a chance of winning an Oscar. The Belgian entry Augure has not been nominated. This year, however, a fellow countryman is involved in the production of the Italian entry Io Capitano.
Who hands out the prizes?
Jimmy Kimmel is hosting this year’s Oscars, but a host of Hollywood stars are expected to hand out the statuettes. Featured this year include last year’s Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as Dwayne Johnson, Matthew McConaughey, Rita Moreno, Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence, Octavia Spencer, Nicolas Cage and Chris Hemsworth.
Who is coming to perform?
No Oscars without musical intermezzos. All nominees of the ‘best original song’ category will perform their song. The Fire Inside from Flamin’ Hot by Becky G, I’m Just Ken from Barbie by Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson, It Never Went Away from American Symphony by Jon Batiste, Wahzhazhe from Killers of the Flower Moon by Scott George and What Was I Made For? from Barbie by Billie Eilish.
Who are the biggest contenders?
If we go by the number of nominations, Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer may be the loser at the Oscars. The film received 13 nominations and is also the leading contender for the most coveted statue, that of ‘best film’. The biggest competition comes from the recently released Poor Things, by the Greek Yorgos Lanthimos, potentially good for 11 Oscars. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has to make do with eight nominations.
