Stanishev on demographic measures: I will be merciless to those who promised and did nothing! – 2024-03-10 06:22:04

Removing the PSA – amateurism and incompetence

“The budget is being voted on and I hope that in the remaining days the proposals on demographics made by the medical profession will be accepted. As you know, I have held meetings with the Prime Minister and with the leaders of the parties and they have all pledged their support. But they were not voted yesterday. I will be merciless to all those who promised one thing and do another, or rather – do nothing.

In Bulgaria, over 200,000 couples have reproductive problems, the age at which young people begin to encounter difficulties with conception is falling, the necessary care for maternal and child health is not being taken. It is a matter of several tens of millions, from a budget of BGN 83 billion. Next year, we must adopt even more serious measures. If we don’t do something now, in 15-20 years the Bulgarian society will stop functioning.”

This is how Sergey Stanishev commented on the adoption of the budget for 2024 by the National Assembly. He is a guest in the show “More of the Day” on BNT.

When asked if there are any concerns about the budget, the former prime minister pointed out “that it lacks buffers. It is not aligned with the world context. Important elections are coming up next year – in the USA, European elections, Taiwan, Russia. Many processes on the world stage will depend on them. Together with the two conflicts that affect the regions around them – in Ukraine and in Palestine. There are expectations of a recession in the EU economies. That is, without buffers in the budget, we can easily get out of the criterion of a deficit below 3% and our most important goal in the financial sphere – entry into the Eurozone – will not be realized. In the 2024 budget, first the expenses are listed and then the revenues are increased,” Stanishev continued his analysis and reminded that during his time there were surpluses, and the debt decreased from 31% to 14% of GDP.

The changes in the Constitution were also a topic of conversation and the MEP emphasized that for him they are conjunctural and will not change people’s lives. Regarding the admission of dual citizenship for the people’s representatives, Stanishev commented, “that it is logical that the people who run the state have loyalty to Bulgaria.” For another change – that the National Assembly should continue to work even if the government falls, he expressed concern , “that his work will be hampered by the lack of a majority and will be used entirely for election purposes.”

Asked to comment on the decision of the Administrative Court in Sofia to stop the dismantling of the Monument to the Soviet Army, the MEP said that “unfortunately for the Bulgarian right, nothing old has been forgotten and nothing new has been learned. That’s how they destroyed, and at the beginning of the transition – again in a talentless and amateurish way – they pushed the mausoleum three times. The perfect distraction because the ugly privatization that was robbery was happening. Opaque and without strategic investors. The same is being done now. This is happening to give motivation to the small core of remaining right-wing voters, because sociologists have measured that the majority of people do not support the removal of the monument. There are such monuments in Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, because they mark the end of the Second World War. As a historian, I maintain that history very harshly punishes those who tamper with it. It can be seen from the court’s decision that it was done illegally. And if “Vazrazhdane” had supported Vanya Grigorova, now we would have another mayor and this would not be possible.”

When asked about the left-wing union announced by Kornelia Ninova, Stanishev replied that “mechanical gatherings usually do not lead to results. It needs content, a cause that unites. PES warned BSP that it could be put “in the freezer” because of unprincipled coalitions. I was the president of PES for eleven years and I do not want to see my party in a similar situation.”

When asked if Vanya Grigorova has a political future, the MEP answered in the affirmative and said that “if there is a new left project, it should be pro-European, social democratic and, above all, give a clear perspective for the country and for the people.”
