In the city center of Leiden, about three hundred people participated in a protest march against the recent sexual incidents in the city. The participants walked from Stadhuisplein through the center back to the square.
The march was held under the name ‘The street belongs to everyone’, at the initiative of the Top 50 Women Leiden, a network of influential women from the city. The march was a response to the assaults and a rape that took place on the night of February 28 to 29. Several women have been harassed in recent weeks.
“The tour went quietly and people mainly had conversations with each other. The statement was made that you have to behave in Leiden and that this behavior is not acceptable. The prevailing feeling is that it is good that we all have this together. The best thing would be if this kind of thing no longer happens,” a spokesperson on behalf of the organizers told the ANP news agency.
Mayor Peter van der Velden and several councilors and aldermen also participated in the tour. “We want people to be able to walk through the city as they want,” the mayor told Hart van Nederland.
Imprisonment
It is not the first time that such incidents have occurred in Leiden. In 2019, the city was also shocked by a number of assaults and rapes in the city center. This led to fear and a feeling of insecurity, especially among young women.
