The mayors of Beel and Meerssen in Limburg have extended the emergency decree at Maastricht Aachen Airport by 48 hours. Information from the police shows that demonstrators want to take action again at the airport. Earlier today, climate demonstrators held a protest against private jets.

The mayors fear “the emergence of a riotous movement or other serious disorders”. The emergency regulation now lasts until Tuesday, March 12, 00:00. The measures were taken in consultation with the police, the military police and the Public Prosecution Service.

Activists from Extinction Rebellion briefly blocked the access roads to the Tefaf art fair at the MECC in Maastricht. Because of the prestigious fair, more private jets than normal landed at the airport near Maastricht. The climate demonstrators argue that the planes lead to “a disproportionate environmental and climate impact”.

Earlier in the day, there was also action at the airport. An emergency ordinance applied around the airport, which has now been extended. The actions caused traffic to come to a complete standstill in several places.
