Jakarta – The oldest piece of forest in the world is found in England. It is estimated that the forest is 390 million years old.
Launch detikInet, the discovery of the oldest forest began with the discovery of a tree fossil found in England. The fossil is said to be part of the oldest forest in the world.
This forest is estimated to be 390 million years old, making it the oldest fossil forest, replacing the Gilboa forest in New York which is 386 million years old.
Neil Davies, a University of Cambridge professor who published his findings in the Geological Society journal, said there were big differences between the forests in England and New York. The ancient forests in New York seem to consist of many different types of plants, whereas in England there is only one type of plant.
Quoted by detikINET from Live Science, the plants are cladoxylopsids which are now extinct. “It looks like a palm, but it’s not. The central stem is long and looks like a loose palm leaf, but the palm leaves are not actually leaves, just lots of twigs,” explained Davies.
Its height is between 2 and 4 meters. This fossil was found in the Hangman Sandstone Formation, which is estimated to be between 393 million and 383 million years ago. In this period, called the Devonian era, the area of England was part of the continent called Laurentia, with a dry and warm climate.
In fact, older trees are found in other areas, because plants began to appear on land around 500 million years ago. However, this new discovery is the earliest example of a forest with trees growing densely and en masse.
“We have found rocks where trees stood in growth positions close to each other in certain areas,” Davies said.
